Oberstufenzentrum 1 Postdam Umbau, Sanierung und Erweiterung

Project description

The existing building was originally built in several phases between 1850 and 1895 and used by the Reichswehr (German Empire Army) and the Red Army until 1994. It was painstakingly returned to its original material and formal language.

The new functional requirements for an upper level school for 1500 students differ completely from the original old barracks and stable uses.

The New was added to the Old in a contemporary formal and material language. By creating an additional basement, new spatial experiences were created without destroying the original monumental form. The large courtyard forms a striking and significant communication area that is of great importance for the life of the school.

The ensemble is an example of how to deal with older buildings and fill them with new life – creating an impressive new building.
